Why Is Acoustic Guitar So Hard to Mic? A Fingerstyle Guitarist’s Pickup-and-Mic Tips

Pickups are one of the first big rabbit holes every acoustic guitarist falls into on the way to playing live.

Why acoustic guitars are so hard to mic, and how to pair a guitar pickup with a microphone, are questions a lot of players run into. While guitarist Liu Huan-yin was making a video on the topic, we asked him to also run Cloudvocal’s clip-on condenser microphone, SonoFlex, as the mic source — to hear what kind of difference it makes, and how he would adjust it for live use.

Background: why is acoustic guitar so hard to mic?

An acoustic guitar is an acoustic instrument: what you normally hear is the body pushing air directly. Once you convert that into an electronic signal through a pickup and play it back through a speaker, it travels a completely different path, so it is bound to sound different. The whole goal of a pickup system is to preserve as much of the guitar’s original tone and character as possible when amplified.

The most natural option is, of course, a microphone — but a mic’s pickup field is sensitive, and the moment stage volume rises it tends to “feed back.” This is the same trade-off every acoustic instrument faces between a pickup and a microphone. Unlike wind instruments, where fitting a pickup is difficult, the guitar’s answer is multi-source capture: combining the strengths of several pickups.

Guitar pickups fall into roughly four types:

The standard dual system: coil + SBT

Liu’s current main system is the US-made Sunrise S2 magnetic pickup paired with a soundboard transducer from the Taiwanese handmade brand SASNiE: the coil captures the strings — stable and solid; the SBT captures the top’s vibration, adding resonance and percussive tap sounds. He adjusts the balance of the two tracks to suit each venue. Because both pickups are passive with very low output, the signal first runs into a Japanese handmade M-factory preamp, then on to the effects.

First, listen to the dual system on its own — this is the baseline for the comparison that follows:

The coil is solid; the SBT brings wooden resonance and a sense of high-frequency space. Together they already sound quite good. But “quite good” still has a gap from the acoustic guitar you actually hear in the room — and the key to closing it is the air in the high end.

Adding the air back: blending SonoFlex into the dual system

When recording in the studio, Liu adds a condenser microphone on top of the pickups to bring the air back (if you want good-sounding recordings at home, see our gear primer for recording with a phone). But microphones are a love-hate affair: wonderfully natural when recording, yet live they force you to deal with feedback.

For this shoot we asked Liu to try SonoFlex in a multi-source blend. SonoFlex is an external clip-on condenser microphone with 48V phantom power and a gooseneck that lets you position the capsule freely.

To achieve the routing shown in the video, you need a device such as the Stompmix to supply power and handle the signal mixing.

Because the dual system captures low end better than the mic, the key move is a high-pass filter (HPF) on the microphone signal: cut the feedback-prone lows so the signal you send keeps the mids, highs, and that all-important top-end air — dramatically lowering the chance of feedback. Most microphone-type devices include a low-cut switch for exactly this.

The coil + SBT sound, already close to the real acoustic tone, gained a more natural sense of space — especially in the highs.

Real-world settings: blend ratios and HPF

1. Coil-to-SBT blend: 6:4

This ratio shifts with the venue, but he starts from 6:4 as a baseline and adjusts from there.

2. How much SonoFlex to add: 3:7

On top of the existing coil-and-SBT base, he blends in the microphone at roughly 30%. The ratio is on the low side, but because the mic supplies what the pickups capture least, the difference is very noticeable.

3. HPF frequency for the lows: 400 Hz

Since the mic is there to add high-end air, he lets the other, feedback-resistant sources handle the low end and rolls off everything below 400 Hz on the mic.

4. EQ philosophy for coil + SBT + mic

First, reduce the coil’s upper-mids — a magnetic pickup’s upper-mids are naturally a bit hard — and let the SBT build the foundation, then bring in the microphone to fill in the air as needed.

For the low end, start centered, then watch how the venue’s PA is set up and trim conservatively — cut a little rather than a lot.

All of the clips above are the result of recording straight into an audio interface. In practice, once every device is connected to a PA speaker, what you hear is also shaped by the speaker’s character. So we recorded one more clip — the track played back through a speaker — to give you a feel for that.

Conclusion: understand your needs first, then find the right gear

Amplifying an acoustic guitar will never be perfectly natural, but today’s tools give you plenty of combinations to work with: a stable coil and under-saddle pickup, an SBT to add resonance, and a microphone to add air. The most important thing is to combine the gear around your own musical style and performance setting — that combination is your answer.
